Topic classification and genre annotation

A part of the Slovak Web 2023 corpus contains genre annotation and topic classification. These can be displayed as corpus structures in Concordance or in the Text type Analysis tool. It is also possible to use the topics and genres as subcorpora.

Genres refer to writing styles and are divided into six groups (blog, discussion, fiction, legal, news, reference/encyclopedia), whereas topic classification is inspired by categories used by https://curlie.org/ (formerly dmoz.org) and usually includes the following topics: arts, beauty & fashion, cars & bikes, culture & entertainment, economy finance & business, games, health, history, hobbies, home family & children, nature & environment, pets & animal, politics & government, religion, science, sex, sports, technology & IT, and travel & tourism.

  • genres cover 20% of the corpus, i.e. 217 million tokens
  • topic classification covers 18.3% of the corpus, i.e. 200 million tokens

Note: As mentioned above, the listed topics are usually included, but there might be slight variations depending on a language and corpus size. The topics should reflect what’s inside the corpus and topics will vary across languages and different cultures.

Hover over the chart to display a number of tokens of the particular topic.
